Introduction

Osteomyelitis of the jaws is a challenging disease for clinicians and patients despite many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Any adverse changes arising from any immunosuppressive systemic diseases will readily manifest itself in the oral cavity.

Osteomyelitis is not an exception to this observation. Thus a careful evaluation of an apparently healthy individual presenting with a jaw swelling that may be associated with odontogenic infection must always be emphasized.

Comprehensive Maxillofacial Osteomyelitis provides detailed information about osteomyelitis of the jaws.

Key features:

  • - Chapters serve to familiarize the reader with the disease, its etiopathogenesis and clinicopathological features
  • - The classification, imaging modalities and disease management are discussed in detail
  • - A detailed year wise bibliography of the literature of almost all the articles and books published on osteomyelitis of the jaws is presented.
  • - An explanation of how osteomyelitis was diagnosed at earlier times and how it is managed these days is given
  • - Critical analysis as well as recommendations regarding new terms is incorporated.
  • - A section focusing on several images of osteomyelitis of the jaws is presented to enhance the reader’s understanding

Comprehensive Maxillofacial Osteomyelitis is the essential reference for medical and dental students on this disease.

Foreword

It is my honor and pleasure to write this foreword for Dr. Deepak Gupta’s book on osteomyelitis of the jaw bones. It takes a lot of time to make a decision to write a text book for clinicians and it takes even more efforts and energy to finish it.

The topic of this text book is well chosen and well considered and contributes to the dental and medical profession. Even in the era of abundant use of antibiotics, osteomyelitis is still an issue, which can lead to debilitating and disfiguring lesions in the maxillofacial region, as early diagnosis is a key. With patients and doctors being more mobile and moving to different parts of the world, it is important now that the doctors recognize the pathology, which they may have never seen in their home country.

The information and expert material in this book are paramount for dental clinicians as this manuscript contains crucial information about the pathology, aetiology and the therapy or treatment approach for patients with osteomyelitis lesions. Information about which diagnostic imaging modalities can and should be used is also nicely illustrated and backed up with qualitative literature.

I am convinced that this book will find its place in many dental offices, clinics and universities.

I congratulate Dr. Deepak Gupta for his formidable work.
