Introduction

Education for Happiness asks what education should ultimately enable people to become and whether happiness deserves a place among its central aims. Moving past narrow ideas of happiness as pleasure, it treats the concept as multidimensional encompassing well-being, ethical living, self-realisation and meaningful relationships. Bringing Eastern and Western philosophy into dialogue, with particular attention to Indian thought, the book connects these ideas to educational purpose, pedagogy and whole-person development, then moves into practice through innovative pedagogies, Bhutan's happiness education model and emerging happiness centres worldwide.

Preface

In the dynamic and ever-changing field of education, the relentless pursuit of academic superiority has frequently taken precedence over the essential objective of education: the comprehensive growth and development of individuals. As educators and policymakers confront the challenges of contemporary learning, there is an increasing recognition of the need to shift our educational frameworks towards promoting not only cognitive development but also emotional well-being and happiness. The book titled "Education for Happiness" aims to examine the complex connection between education and happiness, in response to the urgent requirement for such analysis.

This book is written for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students in response to the new National Education Policy (NEP-2020). This book covers essential aspects of Happiness and its infusion in Education. The book examines the theoretical foundations and practical applications of this concept. The book is organized in a manner that aims to offer a thorough understanding of how happiness is integrated into education and how educational institutions can be modified to prioritize pleasure, well-being, and holistic development. This text explores the philosophical foundations of happiness in education, utilising concepts from both Eastern and Western traditions. Furthermore, it incorporates the concept of happiness, its meaning, and the idea of happiness as explored by various Eastern and Western philosophers, taking us to different happiness centers across the globe.

As the authors of this book, we would like to thank our teachers for guiding our journey from being their students to becoming teachers and enabling us to write this book. We also want to thank the readers whose curiosity and steps towards an education system that promotes a joyful learning journey drive our ongoing passion for this work.

The authors hope that the book will be helpful to students and academics and attract a broader readership.
