Preface

The need for Ukot’s Essential MCQs: Surgery, despite an abundance of standard textbooks in Surgery, is because, currently, there are relatively few books on multiple-choice questions (MCQs). It is easier for specialists to work as a team and produce a voluminous textbook in any of the many areas in Medicine than to single-handedly craft an MCQ book with a global flair.

Prior to the professional examinations in the medical school, a student should have and utilize a variety of good sources of MCQs to test the level of their understanding of lectures and the contents of textbooks of Surgery from many angles. Medical practitioners and other professionals who render care in Surgery should regularly test themselves to ensure proper transfer of knowledge to practice on patients.

This book is designed to allow the reader to self-test on the principles and practical application of Surgery and some of its sub-specialties. The contents are restricted to the foundational and common topics in this popular area of Medicine. The contents are also selected on the basis of global relevance, ensuring that students and medical practitioners in developed countries find clinical correlates with their study and practice environment while their counterparts in developing countries also find questions on conditions in their practice setting.

The book was conceived to have a relatively small size, and it is under 300 pages. This convenient size makes it easy for the user (any student or practitioner in the medical field, and other healthcare professionals who render service in this specialty) to have a good mix of theory and practice. The 350 well-planned MCQs have Answers and robust Notes that accompany them in the matching chapters. This book was also designed to have adequate and necessary References; the author considered it expedient to include an extensive Index – both additions are for the reader’s benefit. The purpose of the MCQs, Answers, Notes, References, and Index, and the objective of the author are to ensure that every reader has agood understanding of the topic chosen from Surgery and some of its sub-specialties, and thus equip them to render appropriate and safe clinical service to patients with surgical health challenges.

This book is Volume 1 of a series of MCQ books. Volume 2 will accompany it within one year of the publication date of this MCQ book that focuses on Surgery.
