Introduction

Congenital heart diseases are the most common neonatal malformations, ranging from 8 to 15/1000 live births in various communities. Improvement of knowledge in the genetic and etio-pathogenic aspects of these malformations as well as the technical advances of diagnostic and therapeutic tools have brought about a significant improvement in overall long-term patient outcome over the last few decades. This e-book is an update on the most recent genetic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this pediatric cardiology. Specifically, the book explains, in detail, recent acquisitions in the field of interaction between the genome and heart development, advances in diagnostic non-invasive techniques and novel therapeutic applications of the percutaneous and “hybrid” cardiologic/surgical procedures. These developments in diagnostics and therapeutics will be extremely valuable for both pediatric and adult cardiologists treating patients with congenital heart defects

Foreword

Foreword By Ziyad M. Hijazi

Due to understanding of basic science and genetic aspects of congenital heart disease, the interest in this area has increased significantly. Further, the improvement in outcome of children born with congenital heart disease (CHD) has improved significantly. This is due to the improvement in surgical as well as interventional techniques developed over the last decade or so. However, such improvements in these two areas would not have been possible without improvement in cardiac imaging

New Insight in Pediatric Cardiology: From Basic to therapeutics is a unique e-publication that deserves much attention. It encompasses many important chapters covering many aspects of CHD. The first chapter focuses on the genetics of congenital heart disease; the second on heart failure and cardiomyopathies; the 3rd on pulmonary hypertension; the 4th on newer echocardiography techniques; the 5th on MRI in congenital heart disease; the 6th on transcatheter treatment of children and adults with CHD; the 7th on the role of patent ductus arteriosus in CHD with duct dependent circulation and the final chapter on hybrid procedures in CHD.

The editors have assembled well-known experts to write these chapters. There is no doubt that this eBook will be an important asset for those taking care of patients (children or adults) with CHD. Medical students, pediatric residents and nursing personnel will find this eBook very useful.
